Thread: .38 auto ammo ???

    Default .38 auto ammo ???

I have a Colt .38 auto pistol , I was at a gun show and picked up some Aguila .38 auto ammo . I know the .38 super ammo is the same dimentions and all .38 super ammo now is stamped .38 auto +P. When did they start stamping it .38auto+P to avoid confusion ? . Now the question, do you think I have plain .38 auto ammo that is safe to shoot in the Colt?

    Thanks

I don't know because I'm not overly familiar with that cartridge but if you don't know I wouldn't risk it.

DO NOT shoot 38 super ammo in a 38 Auto(38ACP) , you might blow the 38 Auto up. This changed in the 1920's.
If you purchased 38 Auto it may be the correct ammo. As long as it's not 38 auto +p.
The box may have a warning on it??

no warning on the box , I know I should not to shoot 38 super +P in a .38 auto. The head stamping says .38 auto , I think all .38 super ammo is marked .38 +P on the head stamp. Does anyone know if they ever made .38 super without the .38+P on the head stamp ?

    Thanks

on an old fragile collectible like a colt model 1903 or similar, I would not take any chances- your own handloads made to proper pressure limits are the safest bet.
