    Default Westchester County Getting Started

    Hey Everyone,

I want to get started with the process of getting my pistol license for Westchester County but do not know where to begin. Any help in the process would be great! I was going to go to a 1 stop shop where they would complete everything for me, give me the letters to sign and give me a discount on the pistol when purchased there. But I was told I can save some money on this board if I did it myself and I am ready to start the process! I look forward to hearing from you guys as far as the steps to do in order so i don't screw up the process.

    Thanks!

First step is to take the NY Hunter Education course. Many if not most counties require this as a prerequisite and it's free. Second step is to go by the county clerk office to pick up the application, reference sheet, and requirements.

Here is the basic run down.

    - Go to clerks office to pick up application packet and pay your fees ($10)
    - Get your references their questionnaire immediately and ask them to get them back to you ASAP. They do need to be notarized.
    - Take NRA Handgun safety course. If you can take a course in CT so you can do the live fire portion as well, the instructors will usually have a variety of different guns to shoot. That helps when going to buy one. NY courses may use BB guns.
    - Buy/put deposit on gun, get receipt and serial number. Depending what shop you go to if you take your NRA cert with you they will let you handle some guns.
    - Fill out your applications and background packet. Get them notarized. Make copies of all necessary documentation.
    - Get your passport photos taken.
    - Call and make an appointment to hand in your application way in advance as the appointments can be 3-4 months out. Just make sure you can have everything ready in time for your appt.
    - On the day of your appt, go to the clerks office, hand in application, give them the $105.25 MO for fingerprints, get printed and photographed.
    - Wait, wait and wait some more. Somewhere between 3-6 months.
    - Get letter in mail saying your permit is ready. Go to clerks office, get another photo taken, thumbprint and walk out with shiny permit. Verify serial number on permit is correct before leaving.
    - Take shiny new permit to gun shop and pick up your gun.
    - Go to range, be safe and have fun!

    DROCK's got it.

just once you put in the completed application, forget about it. you'll worry yourself to death waiting every day for it. even the clerks say dont call to check in unless 5 months have passed

    Thanks DROCK!

That is just an insane process! Gonna try and run over to the county clerk tomorrow at lunch to pick up the application and get started! Thanks so much for breaking it out for me!

Don't sign a long term lease for your apartment, you want to move to Putnam asap. In essence we have no restrictions(only new apps, and that's not for long) and amendments take less than a week. You can buy multiple handguns without getting stares or weird looks from the clerks office. Everyone in the office knows your name and they treat you like family. The sheriff is seen at the local Friends of the NRA dinner, and he talks to you like you're a friend. Life is good.

If you must live in Westchester Co it will be a little harder than most but you will get there. Just think it's better than NYC. Good luck and it's not so bad once it's done.

If I have a Westchester county permit and was to move to Putnam is there a good chance I could get my restrictions removed?
