Sure. But it's been SO many years since I've completed that course, I have no idea where that certificate might be. It's also been years since I've hunted. I did save my last license, which expired in 1991. Man how time flies.

Yes. It is the little piece of paper you get after taking your hunter safety course, or you can use a hunting license if you have one. This is for a handgun permit app correct
Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.

No. This is to supervise a 12yo shooting a long gun at a range.

no one under 12 may shoot a firearm anyplace. air rifles are ok, hunter ed course 11 yr olds ok but limited to air rifles.

The problem is if you allow your kid to shoot and they get hurt you'll be looking at an endangerment charge.

Well this thread just depresses the hell out of me. Ignorant of the law, my nine year old and I have been going to the range on a regular basis for the past few months. In fact it is one of our favorite together activities. I hate New York.

    Bill,

Does the law say that someone under 12 cannot shoot a firearm anywhere? To my knowledge it only applies to ranges.

Penal Code 265.05 says a person under the age of 16 cannot possess a gun, except that a rifle or shotgun may be posessed if the person has a hunting license or permit. I don't know what the lower age limit is for a hunting license.

265.20 lists further exemptions to 265.05, which says that persons under 16 but not under 12 may possess and shoot a gun at a range only if they are under the supervision of a qualified instructor. (Some of the exceptions apply only to air, spring, and compressed gas guns so you should read them in detail first.)

Lots of kids shooting with their parents and relatives are unaware of this law. You'll do fine untill your EX-old lady or here lawyer gets a wild hair and they come after you. Another problem is if the kid gets hurt and you have to go to the Dr's. the Dr. is required to report any firearms accident. If that happens then they will get you for child endangerment. The law is not just at a range, it is anyplace in NY. It is a shame that shooting was once America's past time sport and it was replaced by baseball. Who's fans sit and drool over a mulit-million dollar roid head as a hero.

Ya gotta start them out young, let them get the feel of things right off. This is my daughter as newborn 21 years ago. The desert storm hat and uzi LOL. She was only girl in class, she got highest score on test, and best shots on 22 iron site targets. Sorry had to do bragging rights. LOL.... Grin.

Even at that age she knew, finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. Well done sir.
