Only problem it has to be shot from the bench with one loaded in the gun at a time. Other ranges have different rules. Now if you do get a pre ban mag I personally would not take it to a local range. Not that it is a problem but I just want to avoid a discussion on the stupid NY gun laws with anyone who might question it.
I second Blue Mtn. However look into NWRA-NY.org it is a shooting club that is based at Blue Mountain. I am a member. It is really worth joining. Every other month we hold a high power match at the 200 yd range. In that type of match the blue Mountain range officers have control. However we are given a little more room to play. We can rapid fire all we want. No need to load one round at a time.

Here is a video of my terrible performance testing out my first AR.

Here are some pictures I took last December.

This Sunday we are having a action pistol match. Steel plates, paper targets and some movement. If you are interested give me a PM. You need a NYS pistol license. other wise you can request to use a Pistol caliber carbine. the club has a UZI and a AR with 9mm conversion. You just need to buy ammo and it is $20 to play.

I live in yorktown (westchester) and all I really see at the ranges are AR-15's. There are a few local shops with decent deals, but like Rich said the best deals are online. I bought my model 1 stag from a FFL/dealer in Peekskill for $800 cash but could have got it much cheaper online. Shop around. My latest NY Compliant AR was purchased from Pete at ar15sales.com. Once you get to know your gun you can start building your own. As far as ammo goes... Fastest place to pick some up is walmart (westchester or dutchess). A 100 round box of Federal is about $40. Message me if you have any questions as a couple of years ago I was overwhelmed with my first AR purchase as well

welcome.. i also live in westchester (somers to be exact) and i have the ruger sr556. its rugers version of an ar15 and it works with a gas piston system rather than direct impingement which most standard ar15's use. there are many good manufacturers of ar15's. Smith and Wesson, Colt, LWRC, Daniel Defense, DPMS, Bushmaster, and many others. You will really have to do some homework to see which one you like best. (try going to ar15.net for starters) I chose to go with the gas piston system from Ruger because based on all the information on the net the gas piston system requires less maintenance to keep operating so if I was ever in a situation where I didnt have the ability to properly maintain my rifle it would more than likely remain operable for a longer period of time, plus some other benefits, etc... The Ruger SR556 will run you about 1500 bucks, where as most stardard ar15's will be about 900-1000. the higher end ar15's can run about 1500 bucks as well. Ruger makes two versions of a ny compliant sr556, one (which I have) has the chromed lined bolt, and gas piston system, troy folding battle sights, troy for grips, and hogue grip. the standard one is bare bones, but only runs about 1000. do some research by searching and see what suits you best. I could literally go on in great detail about the options, and differences of both formats (gas piston vs. direct impingement) but its been covered numerous times. gas piston systems are newer and most people are die hard DI fans. to each, his own.

as for ammo, i typically buy on line at several different places depending on who has the current best prices, but natchezss, ammunition2go, ammoman, luckygunner, are just a few places to go.

as for shops, just up the taconic is Collector Rifle and ammo (google it) and they typically sell their guns for about the same prices you could buy online, and the bonus is no ffl fee, but drawback is tax, so it about evens out. they sell preban mags, but they are too pricey (go to ar15.net in the classifieds). they also typically have good prices on ammo too. I bought my ruger, and my remy 700 aac-sd from them along with buckets of ammo (btw, dont buy wolf ammo, or any other steel cased type ammo as it is typically very dirty, but it is also "dirt" cheap typically, so you have to weigh out the pros and cons for yourself), i typically buy the federal xm193 55gr ball ammo for my .223, cci blazer 40gr for my .22 and federal as well for my .308 (different grains based on uses).

In Carmel is Precision Armory (google it) and they are very nice people to deal with, and their prices are ok. They will work with you on price a little (Collector typically doesnt move much on prices, but they are lower to start with). I purchased my xd45 from Precision when I applied for my Westchester pistol permit (still waiting to get an expected rejection letter ;) ). if you have any other specific questions just ask.
