I went to shoot today and loaded up my Mosin with some steel cased ammo. The first shot I fired would not extract. I can move the bolt about 1/4" up but can't get it to go any father. Any idea how to resolve this problem?

A 2x4" took care of the problem. Apparently the Mosin doesn't like the steel cased ammo.
I shoot a lot of steel case.
Never had any issue.
Good you got it fixed.
I'm hoping that the case was just out of spec or some other minor problem because I have quite a bit of steel cased ammo for the Mosin that I want to shoot.
Grease or cosmo gunking it up a bit, perhaps?
I've cleaned it to a like new condition when I got it and have never had a problem with it before. When I went to rechamber the fired casing it wouldn't chamber, it must of been a problem with that round.
Some of the steel case stuff is laquer coated and will eventually create a sticky chamber - even though it was initially cleaned. Czech Silvertip is notorious for this. If you continue to shoot it, you just have to make sure you clean the chamber VERY well when it starts to get sticky.
Of course I do have a couple Mosins that get a little sticky when shooting the heavy stuff as well.

I went shooting a day ago with this rifle and on the first round of this steel cased ammo the chamber locked up again and I had to beat it open with a wood block. No more steel cased ammo for this gun.
I too have had some issues with my Mosin Nagant. I could not get the bolt to close with a round in the chamber. I had to bend the spring on the bolt back a bit so the spring would grab the round. Also getting the gun HOT (like 10 rounds through it quickly) then cleaning that cosmoline crap out helped ALOT
The Mosin Nagant is a fun gun! Its a beast!
I have the M44 and have never had an issue with it, the bolt is smooth as glass, better than some modern rifles I have used. I shoot whatever I can get, no special ammo.
