Wow! $100 is insane. I guess that is the price we have to pay though, thank NY.

Is it really necessary to prove the pre-ban status of a gun?

i would say so.most police dont know much about pre ban.im thinking if you do get stopped by police it might save you a trip to the slammer.they can look it up thier self but that might be after you get locked up and then they will research and find out thier wrong.just my thoughts.yah rich it sucks.

thekid82 has it right. $100 seems expensive but if it saves you a trip to the pokey or just an hour of questioning by the police it is well worth it.

Is your suggestion for the AR15's only or any pre-ban rifle (ex: UZI, AK47)?

you can just find a listing of the preban serial numbers/range of all AR15 style rifles...

google it. its easy to find. i just checked 2 guns out the other day that way.

No need to spend $100 when the infos online for free. Granted its not a letter from Colt but, o well. If you get in it deep enough that some LEO is reading a letter to see if he is going to toss you in jail, your already screwed, letter or not.

    example google finds...

There is no way I'm getting a letter to prove my rifle is preban. I'll print out my own with a colt letter head because it means about the same.

There is no reason any law abiding citizen should have to worry so much about their firearms legality as long as they are obeying the law. The same laws most of us know better than most LEOs. /rant

innocent till proven guilty, they should pay the $100 for me.

sadly, if i still had my preban, $100 is not bad for a CYA policy, that is if they bother to read it

Unfortunately on this issue we have a guilty until proven innocent situation.
